Poverty and Performance Project

This research project aims to generate knowledge about the relationship between poverty and performance, as well as to analyze the impact that performances (artistic, cultural, social, etc.) have on the lives of people living in poverty, seeking to inform new policies to combat poverty. The project is the third phase of research by the International Network for the Study of Presence, a collective of researchers from different universities and research centers in six countries (Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and France).

The International Network for the Study of Presence has been operating since 2013 and is coordinated by GETEPE (Group of Studies in Education, Theater, and Performance) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The goal is to develop collective research in which the participation of different research groups plays a key role in advancing problems and solutions in the various fields in which they operate. The participating groups conduct research in a network, which involves shared data production, analysis, and dissemination.

The research proposes a collective cross-sectional analysis of data produced using different methods. The methodology has five methodological protocols: 1) documentary and video analysis; 2) interviews; 3) participant observation; 4) ethnography; 5) artistic-pedagogical experimentation. The groups adhere to these protocols, collectively developed by the network, and produce data in their respective contexts. The data analysis process is cross-referenced and comparative, based on the collective work of two or more groups. This methodology aims to promote the shared construction of knowledge applicable to the field under study. This project envisions impacts on different themes, as the groups work intersectionally, discussing the interface between poverty and performance, gender, class, subalternity, race, sexuality, immigration, education, aesthetics, politics, creative processes, etc.

On this website, you will find: research results; records of public events held; publications; videos; information about the different groups that make up the Network and the research project, as well as an image gallery illustrating the work carried out.

The International Network for the Study of Presence has been operating since 2013, bringing together researchers from different universities and research centers in several countries. It is coordinated by GETEPE-Group for Studies in Education, Theater and Performance and aims to develop collective research in which the participation of different research groups acts as a key factor in advancing problems and solutions in the different fields in which it operates. The participating groups conduct research in a network, which means data production, analysis and shared dissemination.
