The course “Facing self-injury: guidelines for mothers and fathers of teenagers” is the product of a thesis developed by Bruna Mattos Machado, a doctoral student in psychology and supervised by Prof. Angela Marin.

A psychoeducational intervention to prevent self-harm among adolescents is being developed as a methodology for Bruna Mattos Machado's doctoral thesis, from NEFIES, coordinated by professor Angela Helena Marin. Non-suicidal self-injury is the act of intentionally injuring oneself in a superficial or moderate way, without the aim of causing death. The online course Coping with self-injury, focuses on those who, in most cases, are the last to learn about self-harm in adolescents: parents and guardians. The activity has four modules, is online, free, and registration is open. Interested parties must register at UFRGS Moodle and, after sending, an email (from the same address registered in Moodle) to enfrentandoalns@gmail.com indicating interest.

The motivation for self-harm in adolescents is related to several factors ranging from social relationships in the school environment to family relationships at home.

The aim of the course is to reduce the frequency and intensity of self-harm in adolescents through understanding and taking action. More information is available at course website.
