The program
The Postgraduate Program in Psychology at UFRGS is a Grade 7 Program (the highest grade that can be obtained in CAPES' quadrennial assessments), and its general objectives are: To train highly qualified graduates for professional and academic practice at the level of excellence, offer training for a comprehensive scientific career, encouraging the transfer of acquired skills to other areas of professional and personal activity, stimulate professional and academic development through participation in national and international scientific collaboration networks, promote production and dissemination of scientific knowledge and technologies, offer a stimulating and cutting-edge academic environment, guided by epistemological, theoretical and methodological diversity and provide opportunities for practice in teaching, research, extension, guidance and scientific production.
The Program is made up of four lines of research:
1) Assessment and Measurements in Psychology;
2) Human Development;
3) Health, Prevention and Intervention;
4) Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience.
From an initial tradition focused on Developmental Psychology, throughout its trajectory the Program expanded its scope in other directions, effectively taking advantage of the innovation potential of its research professors. However, such expansion must be understood in terms of complementarity and deepening, and not fragmentation. Interest in human development remains representative, but linked to social interaction and psychopathology. The preparation of psychological instruments for various research and applications has strengthened, constituting a contribution in its own right. Recently, the Program has focused on the area of Basic Psychological Processes, as a way of integrating the vision of psychological development with the bases of neuroscience and neuropsychology. In all lines, the research profile is characterized by epistemological, theoretical and methodological diversity in psychology. The lines are independent, but students and teachers are encouraged to circulate between them. Most professors coordinate projects or participate in projects in two lines of research. The lines of research and projects are described on the Program website.
