Research Areas

The Graduate Program in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers eleven multidisciplinary research areas along two broad paths: Behavior Sciences and Mental Health, fostering the engagement of researchers from various fields.

Behavioral Sciences

Professors

  • Flávio Pechansky, MD, PhD
  • Lisia von Diemen, MD, PhD
  • Félix Henrique Paim Kessler, MD, PhD
  • Claiton Henrique Dotto Bau, MD, PhD

Overview

This research area covers substance use, abuse, or dependence and addictive behaviors that alter mental states and can be detected through measurable impact or via biological, psychological, or behavioral markers. Examples include crack/cocaine and alcohol dependence, pathological gambling, eating disorders or other impulsive behaviors characterizing addiction; also covered is driving under the influence of alcohol or other psychoactive substances.

Path: Behavioral Sciences

  • Marcelo Pio de Almeida Fleck
  • Neusa Sica da Rocha
  • Ives Cavalcante Passos
  • Adriane Ribeiro Rosa
  • Clarissa Severino Gama
  • Simone Hauck,
  • Marco Antonio Knob Caldieraro
  • Maria Paz Loayza Hidalgo
  • Carolina Blaya Dreher

Overview

This research area focuses on the identification of risk or protective factors associated with mental health outcomes and psychiatric disorders, such as quality of life, cost-effectiveness of interventions, suicide, hospitalizations, and relapse, among others.

Path: Mental Health

Professors

  • Arthur Caye
  • Christian Kieling
  • Giovanni Abrahão Salum Júnior
  • Luis Augusto Paim Rohde
  • Maurício Scopel Hoffmann
  • Neusa Sica da Rocha
  • Pedro Vieira da Silva Magalhães

Overview

This research area covers topics in mental health epidemiology, with special interest in the distribution of mental disorders in population groups and their risk factors, as well as translational and genetic aspects of psychiatric epidemiology. It also covers methodological aspects of mental health research, such as design, statistical analysis, and meta-analysis. Assessment of public policies in mental health, as well as planning, organization, and stewardship of health systems are also covered.

  • Marco Antonio Knob Caldieraro
  • Maria Paz Loayza Hidalgo
  • Maria Elisa Calcagnotto
  • Márcia Kauer Sant’Anna
  • Carolina Blaya Dreher

Overview

This area focuses on new concepts in neuroscience to study aspects of brain functioning, behavior, and emotions throughout the life cycle. Examples include studies evaluating biomarkers in peripheral blood or cerebrospinal fluid, pre-clinical trials, post-mortem studies and in vitro studies. Studies on brain processes, human behavior, emotions, chronobiology, sleep, and psychophysiology are also covered in this research area.

Path: Behavioral Sciences

Professors

  • Luis Augusto Paim Rohde
  • Eugenio Horacio Grevet
  • Claiton Henrique Dotto Bau

Overview

Researchers following this path study the role of genetics in disorders such as ADHD, substance use disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism to uncover the possible etiological contribution of  genetic polymorphisms. This area is also concerned with immunogenetic, cytogenetic, molecular genetic and pharmacogenetic methods, pathway analysis, and GWAS.
