[ENG] D3 | D3 (1991 – early 2000s) | D3 was a video cassette format for broadcast use that was introduced by Panasonic in 1991, and was designed to provide the Japanese broadcaster NHK with a replacement for their 1-inch video tapes. | It is an uncompressed composite digital format for standard-definition video, and competed with the more expensive D2. It used ½-inch wide metal particle tape, and came in three different sizes – small, medium and large – providing up to 50, 126, and 248 minutes respectively. Being ½-inch wide meant it was more practical for use in camcorders than the ¾-inch formats like D1 and D2. | During the 1990s, D3 was used by the BBC to transfer video from older analogue formats. The BBC are now transferring video from D3 but there is doubt the project will be completed within the lifetimes of the remaining D3 machines. | D3 lost out to Digital Betacam partly because Digital Betacam machines were simpler to maintain. | Panasonic introduced the component video format D5 in 1994 and this used the same cassettes as D3 but running at twice the speed, so a 120 minute D3 cassette provides 60 minutes in D5 machine. | Dimensions : Small cassette 161 mm × 96 mm × 25 mm ; Medium cassette 212 mm × 124 mm × 25 mm ; Large cassette 296 mm × 167 mm × 25 mm | SOURCE : MUSEUM OF OBSOLETE MEDIA.
