Technology background
Or bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BHV-5), also known as bovine encephalitic herpesvirus, is found in cattle mainly in the Southern Hemisphere, like for example in Australia, Brazil and Argentina, but 20 sporadic cases in North America and Europe have already been reported. It was estimated that, only in Brazil, around 30.000 cattle are lost each year due to rabies transmitted by bats. The number of cattle infected with rabies each year across Latin America should be representative of this number.
Technology description
The present invention concerns a mutant of bovine herpesvirus type 5, vaccine directed against bovine viral encephalitis and rabies virus. More specifically a bovine herpesvirus type mutant 5 which contains a functional direction in each of at least two genes related to clinical manifestations of neurovirulence after infection of a host with BHV-5.
Problem Fixed
BHV-5 is one of the etiologic agents of 15 fatal encephalitis in cattle and other ruminants. rabies in cattle is of the paralytic type, because clinical signs of 25 paralysis are the most characteristic of the infection. Cattle are infected by blood-sucking bat bites during feeding, followed by infection of the central nervous system and, possibly, resulting in the death of animals due to fatal encephalitis.
Applications
– veterinary Medicine;
– Livestock.
Advantages
Until the present moment, there are no safe and effective vaccines available against BHV-5. Cross-protection by vaccination against BHV-1 appears to occur for less virulent samples of BHV-5, but it seems to be insufficient to provide protection against more virulent BHV-5 samples.
