Technology background
The economic losses caused by the B. microplus are estimated to be almost 1 billion dollars a year in Brazil, when accounting for the fall in meat and milk production, the mortality, the birth rate decline, the expenses in its control and the losses resulting from the transmission of the protozoa Babesia bovis and B. bigemina and da ricketsia Anaplasma marginale, agents that cause bovine parasitic sadness.
Technology description
Refere-se ao presente invento o isolamento, characterization and use as a vaccine antigen of a bovine tick protein, Boophilus microplus. The isolated protein, called BAP, is an aspartic protease found, especially, no ovo.
Problem Fixed
The use of the protein as an immunogen in cattle results in a significant reduction in tick viability.
Applications
The antigen can be used as a vaccine, alone or together with other antigens, to prevent tick infestation of cattle and other animal species.
Advantages
In the case of tick B. microplus, proposals for vaccine development are based on the fact that, after repeated infestations, cattle develop a certain degree of resistance to new infestations. The use of vaccines would circumvent the problem of drug resistance and also reduce the possibility of residues in milk and meat..
