Use of ferromagnetic alloy to characterize the corrosion resistance of coatings

Technology background

The effects of the environment on metal materials are a constant concern for industry. Selecting suitable protective coatings for metal protection is critical to the durability and integrity of these materials in order to minimize the effects of the environment. Various metals are coated with thin films to protect them from corrosion and various techniques are used to characterize and evaluate the quality of these coatings. However, most of these techniques require a direct connection between the sample and the equipment used for the analysis and make difficult the continuous and practical monitoring of the corrosion mechanisms.

Technology description

The evaluation system involves the use of a specific metallic substrate - amorphous ferromagnetic alloy, and is based on the magnetostriction / magnetoelasticity principle of this material, which is defined by the deformation of a material due to the action of an external magnetic field, generating a specific resonance frequency. A reduction in the resonant frequencies of the system ( coated magneto-elastic material) is due to the increase in mass caused by corrosion mechanisms.

Problem Fixed

Difficult performance and reproducibility of tests used to characterize and evaluate the quality of coatings.

Advantages

– There is no need for electrical contact between the sample and the equipment;

– Fast detection of faults and irregularities in coatings with low thickness (to 5 mm);

– Continuous monitoring of the protective performance of corrosion coatings;

– Coatings can be evaluated on different electrolytes .

Applications

– Metal packaging in the food industry;

– Paint Industry , varnishes and metallic coatings in general.
