Abstract:
The doctoral research of Roberta Santos da Silva Coussirat—supervised by Prof. Dr. Juliana da Silva and co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Lavínia Schüler Faccini—evaluates the impacts of the 2024 floods on the water quality of Lake Guaíba. The study employs an integrated approach combining physicochemical water analysis; the identification of emerging pollutants, metals, and microplastics; and ecotoxicological and genotoxic assessments using model organisms (Caenorhabditis elegans and Daphnia magna) and human HepG2 cells, alongside systems biology analyses to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the observed effects. The research aims to understand the impacts of these contaminants on aquatic ecosystems and human health, contributing to the development of environmental monitoring and water quality management strategies in the face of challenges posed by climate change.
