[ENG] 1-inch Type A video tape | 1-inch Type A video tape (1965 – 1976) | 1-inch Type A was an analogue helical-scan video tape format that was introduced in 1965 by Ampex. | It was designated as Type A by the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) in the 1970s to distinguish it from the later Type B and Type C 1-inch formats. Ampex’s Type A never found widespread use as a broadcast format because it did not record a vertical blanking interval and therefore did not meet broadcasting standards such as those of the Federal Communications Commission in the US. It did however see use in industrial and educational markets as the machines were much smaller than the 2-inch VTRs then commonly in use. | The first models recorded in black and white, but colour was introduced in 1967. Some models came with TV tuners and were for domestic use (such as the 1966 Ampex VR-6275 Consolette). As the format was developed, it improved in quality with high-band and very high-band recording available on later models, along with PAL versions. | The 1-inch wide tape was on metal or plastic open reels with NAB-style hubs. | Ampex worked with Sony on the later 1-inch Type C format that was fully compliant with broadcast standards, and in 1976 Ampex discontinued all of its Type A video recorders. The last Ampex model, the VPR-1, could be converted to Type C by Ampex and many were. | Working Type A machines are now very scarce. | SOURCE : Museum of Obsolete Media Available at : https://obsoletemedia.org/video/tape/ Accessed : 23 nov. 2022
