| FUENTE : Ampex. in: Wikipedia. Available at : https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampex Accessed : 23 nov. 2022

[ENG] 2" Quadruplex | 2" Open Reel | Synonym : 2" Quadruplex | Dates : 1956 – early 1980s | Common Size(s) : Tape width: 2" | Reel: ~12" (diameter) | Container: 15" x 15" × 4" (20–30 lbs) | Description : Two-inch open reel (or "quad") is a magnetic tape-based analog video format that was used primarily in professional television studio settings. The tape is composed of magnetic particles, a binder, and a polyester base. The reel is approximately 12" inches in diameter. The shipping container for this format is easily identifiable due to its sheer size of 15" square × 4" and weight of up to 20–30 lbs. Two-inch open reels may also be found in cardboard boxes, which often hold extensive labeling information.| Composition : Polyester magnetic tape on a plastic or metal reel. | SOURCE : The Preservation Self-Assessment Program (PSAP) - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. [ENG] 2-inch Quadruplex videotape | 2-inch Quadruplex videotape (also called 2? quad video tape or Quadraplex) was the first practical and commercially successful analog recording video tape format.[1] It was developed and released for the broadcast television industry in 1956 by Ampex, an American company based in Redwood City, California.[2] The first videotape recorder using this format was built in the same year. This format revolutionized broadcast television operations and television production, since the only recording medium available to the TV industry before then was film used for kinescopes, which was much more costly to utilize, could only be used once, images could be ruined by light leaks if the film was not developed and took time to develop at a film laboratory. In addition, kinescope images were usually of obviously inferior quality to the live television broadcast images they recorded, whereas quadruplex videotape preserved almost all the image detail of a live broadcast. | SOURCE: Quadruplex videotape. in: Wikipedia. [ENG] 2" Quadruplex videotape (Ampex) | Analog Videotape | Types of Analog Tape Formats : 2" Quadruplex videotape (Ampex) | TAPE COMPOSITION : Analog videotape usually consists of three layers : | Base :
The flexible base of videotape is made of polyester (polyethylene-terephtalate, PE or PET).; | Binder : The binder is the coating which contains the magnetic oxide particles, and is applied to the based during manufacturing. The binder consists of polyester urethane compounds, in which the oxides are suspended. May different binder formulations have been used during the years, varying from format to format, manufacturer to manufacturer, and even batch to batch; | Backcoat : Many videotapes have a backcoat applied to the reverse side of the tape, to reduce friction and static electricity buildup, as well as to facilitate an even tape wind. |

[ENG] Quadruplex (2-inch Quad) video tape | Quadruplex (2-inch Quad) video tape (1956 – early 1980s) : Quadruplex (or Quad) was the first commercial video tape format, introduced in the US by Ampex in 1956. Although the BBC had been experimenting with its own video tape format, VERA, since 1952, it was not perfected until 1958 and abandoned soon afterwards. | Prior to the introduction of video tape, broadcasters used kinescopes to film television images for replay. The use of video tape allowed broadcasters to record programmes for later viewing in different time zones, or for resale, much more easily. | Quadruplex used four recording and playback heads that spun at high speed to put the video signals in transverse stripes across the tape, and this meant that the tape could move relatively slowly (7.5 or 15-inches per second). Tape reels were up to 14-inches in diameter, usually metal, and used a NAB hub. A reel containing 4,800 foot of tape could record for one hour at 15-inches per second. Audio, control, and cue tracks were still recorded in a linear fashion near the edges of the tape. | Over the course of its life, high-band and super high-band versions of Quadruplex were introduced. | Because of its quality, Quadruplex remained the standard for broadcasting until the 1980s when it superseded by smaller (but still analogue) formats like 1-inch-Type B, 1-inch Type C, U-matic and Betacam that used helical scanning. | Smaller, 8-inch, reels were used in a portable Quadruplex recorder, the Ampex VR-3000, which was released in 1967 and could be carried on the back of a camera operator for up to 20 minutes recording time. | SOURCE : Museum of Obsolete Media Available at : https://obsoletemedia.org/quadruplex/ Accessed : 23 nov. 2022
