A região Neotropical é a mais biodiversa do planeta.n on the planet. Because it is included in different biogeographic regions, and includes a biome that does not exist in other Brazilian states – the Pampa – Rio Grande do Sul has a very high diversity of species of fauna, but above all quite different from the rest of the country. This project will seek to provide all interested citizens with reliable information regarding animal species of Rio Grande do Sul, highlighting those unique to the state and taking advantage of the existence of a strong tradition of zoological research at UFRGS and other entities of the state. The project has the potential to host dozens of UFRGS students and provide knowledge accumulated in decades of research in Rio Grande do Sul. It will, necessarily, be an unfinished project, since new animal species are constantly discovered and described; thus, it has the potential to become a long-term project, and to harbour many generations of students.
