At this week’s GPMC Research Seminar, we will be welcoming Eduardo Hippler, an undergraduate student and scholarship holder, who will be leading a workshop titled “Web Scraping: Definition, Implications, and Potential for Research.” As usual, the seminar will take place on Thursday (Nov 7th), from 9 AM to 10 AM. You can join the discussion in person at EA’s CEPA room or via Zoom.
The workshop will provide an introduction to the use of web scraping in academic research. Using Python, it will cover how to manipulate APIs and extract data from ready-made web pages. We will demonstrate both basic request methods (GET) and more advanced implementations using frameworks and WebDrivers for complex data collection. Additionally, there will be reflections on the legal aspects of this form of data extraction. Finally, the workshop will explore the potential applications of web scraping in scientific research, particularly in the fields of marketing and consumption.
Eduardo Hippler Wollmann is an undergraduate student in International Relations at UFRGS and a member of the Marketing and Consumption Research Group (GPMC). He currently serves on the executive board of Perspectiva, a UFRGS magazine that publishes student research on international relations topics. Eduardo has a strong interest in computing and programming and is involved in the GPT, Data, and Development teams of the Atlas of Opportunities project, which is associated with the Group.
