The Master’s Degree in Mathematics at UFRGS consists of two programs. At the time of registration, the candidate must choose ONE of the two programs: Mathematics or Probability and Mathematical Statistics.
Each of these programs is made up of a basic core of mandatory subjects, listed below:
Mandatory subjects in Mathematics:
- MTP00004: Algebra
- MTP00016: Complex Variable
- MTP00034: Ordinary Differential Equations
- MTP00027: Differential Geometry
Mandatory subjects in Probability and Mathematical Statistics:
- MTP00047: Probability
- MTP00049: Stochastic Processes
In addition, the student must choose one of the following subjects:
- MTP00018: Integration Theory
- MTP00048: Mathematical Statistics
Master’s students in the Postgraduate Course in Mathematics at UFRGS may be supervised by professors registered in the Program as supervisors.
Normally, all students in the program must take at least two courses per semester. In addition to the mandatory courses, the student must pass optional courses in order to attain the necessary credits required by the program: in total, the student must take eight courses, totaling 32 credits.
The choice of optional courses must be made by mutual agreement between the student and his/her dissertation advisor.
Candidates who meet the following requirements in the Mathematics or Probability and Mathematical Statistics programs, respectively, will be entitled to the title of Master in Mathematics or Master in Probability
and Mathematical Statistics:
- Obtain a total of 32 credits (any of the subjects corresponds to 4 credits).
- Pass a proficiency exam in a foreign language.
- Have a dissertation approved by an examining board.
The estimated time to complete the Master’s degree is two years; the maximum time allowed (by the course regulations) to complete the Master’s degree is four years.
