Special Topic: Integrating the Ecosystem View into Coastal Vulnerability Assessment

An integrated and holistic assessment of coastal vulnerability must include aspects of the physical, biotic and social environment. Current practices are intrinsically flawed because they do not consider social aspects or the ecosystem view or both. Integrating the ecosystem view into coastal vulnerability assessments makes it possible to integrate the different factors that influence the capacity of coastal environments and communities to respond and adapt to climate change and extreme events. The application of remote sensing techniques, GIS and the principles of ecosystem-based management is fundamental to this integration. A better understanding of the factors that generate and influence social and environmental vulnerabilities is necessary to identify the adaptations that are needed to support sustainable development in coastal areas.
