PROPAR – UFRGS
Created in 1979 by a group of professors from The Department Of Architecture Of UFRGS, with ample institutional support of The Department, which ever since has been linked by formation and regimental links, PROPAR-Programa de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura da UFRGS(Research and Postgraduate Studies Program in Architecture of UFRGS), was one of the first brazillian centers to develop a critical approach to architecture, founded in a reflexion about the theory and practice of its field, distancing itself of interpretations of the architectural phenomenom of the time, starting from peripheral references, more os less separate to the operative and coordenated aspects of the construction projetct.
PROPAR started operating in the postgraduate studies lato sensu, in the academic specialization area, from 1980 to 1989, until gaining approval and credentials from the Master's Degree Course in Architecture in May 22nd,1989.
In its first active decade, other than constant research and expansion activities, thirteen specialization courses were done: eight about Housing Architecture, two about Industrial Architecture, two about Modern and Contemporary Architectural Thinking and one about Urban Design. The second active decade will be filled by the consolidation effort of the Master's Degree Course, whose implantantion naturally brings important developments in PROPAR's action program, which maintains itself loyal to the theoretic approach that generated the first formative impulse.
The creation of the Doctorate In Architecture in 2000 is the corollary of the road made by PROPAR, reflecting in the consolidation of the work developed in the Master's Degree Course's cronogram. It equally reflects in the qualitative and quantitative alterations in the permanent professors' body of PROPAR.
