Graduate Program - PPGBCM

PPGBCM

The Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Biology (PPGBCM) at the Biotechnology Center (CBiot) was established by its faculty-researchers with the aim of training masters and doctors in areas related to biotechnology. PPGBCM was approved by the UFRGS Graduate Chamber on March 17, 1998, and subsequently by the Advisory Technical Group of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) on July 21, 1998. PPGBCM started with a grade of 5 (the maximum for new courses) from CAPES and has maintained a grade of 6 since its second triennium of activities, indicating an international level of excellence.

A total of 253 doctors and 399 masters have been trained since then. Currently, PPGBCM has 38 supervising professors (30 from the permanent core), 58 doctoral students, and 29 master's students.

Differentials of PPGBCM

For Faculty

New supervisors are admitted to PPGBCM based on the recommendation of at least two program faculty members. Faculty performance is assessed annually. The criteria for faculty members in the 2013-2016 quadrennium included the production of full articles published in internationally circulated journals with an impact factor of 1.6 or higher, totaling 400 points considering the Qualis of the CB-I Area. Additionally, faculty members were required to co-author at least one paper with PPGBCM students during the quadrennium.

For Students

Admission to PPGBCM is made upon recommendation of a faculty member qualified as a supervisor. For the allocation of scholarships, students are classified through an evaluation process that includes CV analysis and an interview, and for doctoral candidates, a thesis project presentation before a committee is also required.

Students who do not need or cannot be awarded a scholarship also present their thesis/dissertation projects before a committee.

Each student has an individualized Study Plan, developed in agreement with the supervisor, defining the required courses and activities (seminars, teaching activities, scientific writing) to be completed by the student. Monitoring Committees (CAs), consisting of two faculty researchers chosen by the student and their supervisor, are responsible for periodically evaluating (November of each year) the student's performance through written reports and poster presentations.

Publications

One of the indicators of the impact of CBiot's activities on Gaúcho and Brazilian societies is the quantity and quality of articles published by our researchers in highly relevant international journals, often subject to interactions with the productive sector.

Most of these works are associated with the training activities of our students into new high-level researchers, ready to tackle societal problems, whether in teaching, research institutes, or technology-based companies.
