Central to the activities developed at CBiot since its foundation, Molecular Biology consists of the study of the structure and function of molecules and macromolecular systems, particularly in the molecular information flow in living organisms from their genetic material. In addition to being essential in the commercial production of Taq DNA polymerase in Brazil in the 1990s by CBiot, this expertise allowed us to integrate the "Genolyptus: Brazilian Eucalyptus Genome Research Network," which included 14 companies from the forestry sector and eight Brazilian research institutions. We coordinated the sequencing of the eucalyptus transcriptome, resulting in the publication "The Genome of Eucalyptus grandis" in the journal Nature in 2014, paving the way for the development of the first transgenic eucalyptus cultivars. In addition to these contributions, CBiot researchers have also been involved in rice improvement, mainly in the biofortification of its seeds with iron and zinc, and were responsible for producing the first genetically fortified rice plants in Rio Grande do Sul.
The use of molecular biology techniques has allowed CBiot researchers to accumulate solid expertise in various areas of knowledge and applications. For example, it enabled us to pioneer the description of the pathogenesis of filamentous fungi in ticks, constituting a potential tool for biological control of this important pathogen in Brazilian and global livestock. Finally, to support these research efforts and enhance future advancements, CBiot established the Multi BioMol Lab - CBiot Molecular Biology Multi-User Laboratory, equipped with the necessary infrastructure for studies and technology developments in molecular biology, also serving as support for companies incubated at IECBiot.
