New methodologies for the design of industrial units taking into account the controllability of the process during the design of the units are being developed by GIMSCOP. A special focus has been given to the intensification of processes and the development of a new decentralized concept of biorefineries. In this area the processes of rapid catalytic pyrolysis, pyrolysis with microwaves, production of microalgae and ethanol production from sweet potato have been developed at the bench level. The goal is to develop fully automated plants that can be monitored remotely. To this end, specific low-cost sensors based on two-dimensional fluorescence are also being developed. Biorefineries are a possibility of adding value to biomass through its transformation into chemicals and fuels. See the report available at https://www.ufrgs.br/tvengenharia/gimscop/ which presents the main ideas of the decentralized model of biorefineries that is being developed in the GISMCOP.
