The next meeting of our research group (https://www.ufrgs.br/gpmc) will be different!
We invite you to attend the Public Defense of the Dissertation Proposal “Predicting Demand using Nighttime Satellite Imagery” by Alina Flores, master’s student at PPGA / UFRGS and member of GPMC.
The evaluation bank will be composed of Prof. Dr. Leonardo Nicolao (UFRGS) and Prof. Dr. Burçin Bozkaya (New College of Florida). The dissertation project is guided by Prof. Dr. Vinicius Brei (UFRGS).
The defense will take place on Monday, 08/31, at 3 pm, virtually, using Google Meet (https://meet.google.com/mrp-dsiv-ivn).
Abstract: It is widely recognized that forecast demand is important for several aspects of management. Marketing managers usually forecast demand through methods that involve the collection of primary data, public data, time series, surveys, management judgment, among others. However, almost all of these methods are expensive, slow, sometimes inaccurate and limited geographically. This study proposes an innovative method to predict demand for electrical materials in thousands of Brazilian cities using nighttime satellite imagery and machine learning algorithms. The satellite data can provide a unique method to visualize and analyze the spatial distribution of the socioeconomic environment in a consistent, efficient and low-cost way. The proposed method will result in a cheaper, faster, scalable, with greater precision and georeferenced method to forecast demand, advancing the theoretical and methodological frontiers of demand prediction in marketing.
We waiting for your (virtual) presence!
