Number 13 is the outside centre, who is generally the faster of the two centres and, along with the wingers, is among the team’s more important attacking players. The prime aim of the outside centre is to set up team-mates playing outside him, in particular the fullback and winger. This usually involves luring the opposition defence into pursuing him and, through that, creating enough room to throw what must be a perfectly timed pass, putting a team-mate through the opposition’s defensive line. But he must also have the attacking instinct to know when to attack the line himself, and to have faith in his own speed to get him through. The outside centre is the player who tries to ruin any formation in the opposition defence by producing that unpredictable, attacking spark.
The outside centre usually has more space to work with than the inside centre; he must also be an expert kicker. Many tries have been achieved after a number 13 has broken his way through the opposition defence, and then put his winger or fullback over the tryline with a precise kick into the corner of the field, well behind the opposition defence. Just as important, the outside centre must also be one of the best defenders, especially as a fast running fullback is usually charging at him with ball in hand, and by the time he hits him, running at full speed. This is no position for the faint-hearted.
