Intermediate mass black holes, star clusters & the radio Universe (Kristen Dage – Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy, Australia)

Sala de VideoConf IF/UFRGS

Even though intermediate mass black holes are at the heart of some of the biggest questions in galaxy evolution (specifically how did supermassive black holes form?), we are terrible at finding them. Theory suggests that they ought to preferentially form in dense clusters of stars, which are dynamic black hole factories. I will discuss our observational evidence for intermediate mass black holes, including attempts to find them through both radio and X-ray searches, as well as via tidal disruption events, their connections to ultra-compact dwarf galaxies, and how this impacts our understanding of the early Universe.
