The Stellar Populations of Integrated Light: Opportunities and Challenges – Mark Norris (UK)

In this talk, I will discuss a method to disentangle the star formation, chemical enrichment, and assembly histories of galaxies from integrated light spectroscopy. I will demonstrate how this can be used to infer the mass of stars that formed in-situ in a galaxy, as well as the mass that was acquired during mergers (ex-situ stars). I will conclude by discussing some of the limitations and outstanding problems that limit our ability to learn more about galaxies from integrated light spectroscopy.
