Program Background and Context

The Postgraduate Research Program in Biological Sciences: Biochemistry formally began its activities in 1977, with the accreditation for the Master’s Program.

From 1978 on, exchanges were established with research centers in other countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, England, United States of America, Switzerland, Spain and Germany.

In 1983, through an agreement with Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), we started the PhD program.

In the following decade, Professors Iván Izquierdo and Elena Bernard, from Argentina, and Richard Burnard Rodnight, from England, were hired by the Biochemistry Department and incorporated into the Graduate Program. In 1992, the program reached the maturity to autonomously develop doctorate programs.

At the end of the 90s, when the current CAPES evaluation system was developed, the program received a grade of 7 until the last quadrennium (except for the triennium 2010-2012 – concept 6). The PPG has a strong social insertion, a broad international cooperation, has graduated 402 (four hundred and two) doctors.

The Department of Biochemistry, Institute of Basic Health Sciences (ICBS), Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), which hosts the Postgraduate Research Program (PPG), is located in its own building, specifically built for research, within the safety and health standards. The laboratories are adequate. We have a growing demand for the local vivarium and the UFRGS Central Animal Facility/Center for Reproduction and Experimentation in Laboratory Animals (CREAL) (we use about 18 thousand rodents/year in our research activities: rats and mice) and cell culture rooms, which accompany the growth of our scientific production and training of human resources. The PPG (through PROEX) has maintained these activities, also counting on the support of ICBS and UFRGS.

The CAPES Portal, since its creation and growing expansion, has allowed a fantastic leap in the quality of Brazilian research and graduate studies. The PPG-Biochemistry uses the Portal intensely and constantly. In addition, we have a library at the Institute of Basic Health Sciences (ICBS) and libraries from related programs – Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) and Biociências, as well as the UFRGS Central Library.

IT Resources

The University’s computer network has satisfactorily met our needs. We have a wireless network that meets our needs. Besides this, UFRGS allows access to the high speed network for visiting researchers from other HEIs.

We have acquired modern and sophisticated videoconferencing equipment that will allow a wonderful articulation and inter-institutional relations (national and international), pedagogical improvement through the use of information and communication means and technologies, allowing the updating of the data bank and the materials to divulge the activities of Distance Education (DL) of UFRGS and institutions in Brazil and abroad. In addition, when composing the boards of master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral candidates, there will be an enormous saving by reducing expenses for airfare and per diems, and saving the time of the members of the boards, contributing to improve the quality of the evaluations.

We have the guarantee of assistance to the computers by technicians from the data processing center (CPD) of the UFRGS. PROEX has also allowed the updating of general and specific computer programs, necessary for the development of projects.
