Course Description
Knowledge organization is often associated with libraries, catalogs, and classification systems, yet its influence extends far beyond information retrieval. The systems used to organize knowledge shape the production, dissemination, discovery, evaluation, preservation, and reuse of scholarship itself. Metadata, controlled vocabularies, repositories, research data infrastructures, and emerging artificial intelligence systems all influence what knowledge becomes visible, accessible, and ultimately influential.
Drawing on contemporary research in knowledge organization, scholarly communication, research data management, open science, AI, and metadata, this course examines how knowledge organization operates throughout the entire scholarly lifecycle—from knowledge creation and data production to publication, discovery, preservation, and machine-mediated access.
