Resumo:
This work proposes another explanation for Brazil’s ongoing process of structural regress. Building from Okishio’s (1961) famous Marxian theorem on the tendency of therate of profit not to fall following technical change, we suggest a new circumstance for which the rate of profit does fall. Before discussing its importance for understanding Brazil’s economic trajectory, the paper briefly reviews some features of Brazilian structural change and touches on some explanations advanced to understand its demise. It then explores the role productive transformation and functional distribution play in an economy experiencing the type of industrialization Brazil did in its ‘developmentalist’ period, pointing to the existence of an endogenous limit to change linked to profits. Understanding this limit is not only useful for analyzing why regress has set in, it more importantly provides a cautionary limelight should the Brazilian economy experience a renewed cycle of change.
Keywords: structural change; Okishio theorem; deindustrialization.
