The objective of the PPGCI is to train high-level professionals at the master and doctoral levels for academic research and technological development. It is intended to prepare students mainly with a degree in Civil Engineering or Architecture and other related areas, such as Production Engineering, Materials Engineering, Design and Meteorology. It is expected that a substantial part of the masters and doctors work in research institutions, but also, especially masters, develop their professional activities in industry, services or public sector.
In addition to the fundamental commitment to transversality, the new program will be guided by a set of basic guidelines, aiming at achieving a level of excellence and promoting its growth:
- High-level scientific production in various forms of publication, particularly in scientific periodicals with a high impact factor. Young professors will be strongly encouraged to achieve high levels of independent output in their careers. Students will also be offered the possibility of replacing thesis and dissertation with collections of articles published in high-impact journals.
- Strong emphasis on methodological rigor, with the support of instrumental subjects related to methodology, research, instrumentation and statistics.
- International insertion of its professors, through projects involving institutions from many countries, the exchange of professors and students, and the encouragement of young professors to carry out post-doctoral studies abroad.
- Involvement in themes of great social, economic and environmental relevance to the country
- Strong interaction with society, aiming to produce and disseminate knowledge to its users or beneficiaries, private companies, sector entities, public agencies and community organizations.
