Nupergs collection digitization expands access to RS political memory

The Rio-Grandense Policy Research and Documentation Center (Nupergs), linked to IFCH/UFRGS, has partnered with the Documentation Center and Digital Research Collection (Cedap/Fabico) to digitize its historical collection. The initiative aims to preserve rare documents and the expansion of public access to the material, which brings together electoral campaigns in Rio Grande do Sul since 1968, as well as files from important political leaders.

According to Manoel Caetano Passos, Nupergs researcher and project coordinator, “the initiative will facilitate access to historical documentation, still unpublished, as well as provide the preservation of documents, as they will no longer be handled.”

CEDAP is responsible for technical support, providing specific equipment for scanning of rare materials such as planetary scanner, large format, negative and microfilm scanner. Professor Rene Faustino Gabriel Junior, responsible for Cedap, points out that digitization requires specialized labor and infrastructure investments. He also points out that digital access contributes to democratizing knowledge, allowing remote consultation to materials.

Scanned content is available on the Cedap portal: https://cedap.ufrgs.br/jspui/ . The full collection of Nupergs will be gradually incorporated into the platform. Among the available materials are documents and press clippings related to Joaquim Francisco de Assis Brasil, Raul Pilla, Flores da Cunha, João Francisco de Souza, Protásio Alves and Flores Soares.
