Naci turns 30 at UFRGS

Anthropology and Citizenship Center (Naci) marks three decades of research, extension and training at IFCH
In 2025, the Nucleus of Anthropology and Citizenship (NACI/UFRGS) completes 30 years of activities. Created in 1995 by anthropologists Claudia Fonseca, Naemi Brito and Daisy Barcellos, Naci consolidated as a meeting and debate space on rights and citizenship, articulating research, extension and academic formation.
Over the course of three decades, the nucleus has expanded its thematic agenda, maintaining a focus on childhood and adolescence, gender relations, racial relations, immigration, ethnic rights and justice and justice practices. The projects developed seek to critically analyze the notions of citizenship and justice in their intersections with social life, including legislation, new “rights” and intervention programs with urban, rural and ethnic minorities. Naci also investigates moralities and subjectivities involved in the forms of government of individuals and populations, as well as the knowledge, technologies and sciences mobilized in these processes.
The nucleus is integrated with the Department of Social Anthropology and the Postgraduate Program in Social Anthropology (PPGAS) of UFRGS. Undergraduate and postgraduate students participate in it, as well as teachers and researchers linked to UFRGS and other institutions. Periodically, Naci organizes debates with interlocutors from the country and abroad.
The current coordination is by Claudia Lee Williams Fonseca and Denise Fagundes Jardim.
