Lecture "Viril Celibato" - Maya Mayblin (University of Edinburgh)

PPGAS-UFRGS and LAPSO invite to the lecture by Professor Mayblin from the University of Edinburgh on August 18, Monday, at 14h00, in the Enrique Serra Padrós (IFCH).
The lecture has as its title "The Viril Celibacy and the Foundations of Sovereignty" and is a new development of arguments published in his recent book (2025, by Fordam University Press) "Vote of Faith: Democracy, Desire, and the Turbulent Lives of Priest-Politics" [Vote of Free Translation: Democracy, Desire and Lives turbulents of political priests]. https://fordhampress.com/vote-of-faith-hb-9781531509088.html
Maya Mayblin is a researcher of gender, morality, religion and politics phenomena in Brazil a few decades ago (since 2001), having published her first book in 2010 with the title "Gender, Catholicism, and Morality in Brazil: Virtuough Husbands, Powerful Wives" [Gender, Catholicism and Morality: Maride Virtuous and powerful wives "]. In addition, Maya was also one of the co-organizers of the important volume on an anthropology of Catholicism (2017), published by the University of Californa Press.
In the 18th lecture, Maya will tell us about how the figure of Catholic priests who move away from the church to apply as politicians made her think about masculinities and the strength, meaning and importance attributed to virility in both religion and politics even when it comes to celibate men who make a vow of chastity. What does this tell us about the foundations of the concepts of sovereignty? How is this relates to biopolitics (Foucault)? What does masculinity produce and prevent political relations? And how does a performance of this virile celibacy develop?
The lecture will be in person and will not be transmitted. It is not necessary to register.
