Symposium “Beyond the 'Father's Odor'” discusses Afroreferenced thinking and Legacy of Valentin-Yves Mudimbe

event takes place on May 28, at IFCH/UFRGS, transmitted by YouTube

On May 28, the UFRGS Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences hosts the symposium "Beyond the" Father's Odor ": Hermeneutics of Parefected Critical Studies", promoted by the Graduate Program in History. The event will be held from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm, at the Luís Otávio Aquino (IFCH Miniauditory, Vale Campus), with live broadcast on IFCHDAUFRGS on YouTube.

The activity honors Congolese philosopher Valentin-Yves Mudimbe (1941–2025), died in April this year. In his rehearsal L'Odeur du père (the odor of the father), published in 1982, Mudimbe critically analyzed the impacts of European colonization on contemporary African thinking, focusing on the fields of language, epistemology and identity.

The Symposium brings together researchers who discuss Africal theoretical proposals and interpretations produced from the African societies themselves. The program includes communications and debates focused on fundamental authors of African studies.
