PPGPP/UFRGS egress thesis is a highlight in the UFRGS website

The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul highlighted in its institutional portal the Doctoral Thesis of Guilherme de Queiroz Stein, egress of the Postgraduate Program in Public Policy of the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (PPGPP/IFCH/UFRGS). The research investigates the relationship between political regimes and the advancement of policies aimed at energy transition, showing that democratic countries tend to implement these policies faster and more effectively.

The study, guided by Professor Alfredo Alejandro Gugliano, used a database with information from 132 countries, covering economic, environmental, energy and institutional indicators. From economics, Stein analyzed the factors that favor the adoption of regulatory policies for renewable energy such as solar, wind and biomass.

Among the main results, research demonstrates that democratic environments offer more favorable conditions for energy transition, due to the greater ability to organize civil society, the existence of control and transparency mechanisms and commitment to international agreements. Other factors, such as the search for safety and energy diversification, the presence of leftist parties in the government and the performance of international organizations, were also identified as relevant determinants.

The thesis entitled "Democracy and Energy Transitions to Sustainability: the political regime and the adoption of regulatory policies for renewable energy" contributes to the debate on sustainability, public policy and governance, offering subsidies to both policy formulators and organizations and companies in the energy sector.
