Ocorrerá no dia 13/05/2026, quarta-feira, às 14h na sala 401 A – FCE, o Seminário de Pesquisa “Success Spills Over: How Awards Affect Winners’ Peers in Brazil“”, na área de Economia Aplicada, ministrado pela Profa.  Fernanda Estevan (FGV EESP)

Resumo:

How does recognition of an individual affect the pursuit of opportunities amongtheir peers? Using a regression discontinuity design and data on 7.5 million students,we identify the impact of a symbolic award within the Brazilian Math Olympiad.Witnessing a classmate’s recognition generates sizable positive spillovers: it increasespeers’ future participation by 4.5% and the likelihood of top-decile scores by 13%.The award leads to more future winners, suggesting the signal activated latent poten-tial rather than merely inflating expectations. These gains do not discourage lower-achieving students or trigger resource reallocation. Effects are driven by proximityand amplified by gender congruence.
