Institute of Languages and Literature

The Institute of Languages and Literature was originally created under the name “Central Language Institute” on September 1st 1970. One year later, three Departments were formed: Department of Classical and Vernacular Languages, Department of Modern Languages and Department of Linguistics and Philology.

The Undergraduate Language Teaching Program, created in 1942, offers majors in: Portuguese and Respective Literatures, German and Respective Literatures Portuguese and Respective Literatures, Spanish and Respective Literatures Portuguese and Respective Literatures, French and Respective Literatures Portuguese and Respective Literatures, English and Respective Literatures Portuguese and Respective Literatures, Italian and Respective Literatures German and Respective Literatures Portuguese and Respective Literatures, Greek and Respective Literature Portuguese and Respective Literatures, Latin and Respective Literature Spanish and Respective Literatures French and Respective Literatures English and Respective Literatures Italian and Respective Literatures Portuguese and Respective Literatures Relevant advancements in linguistic research and an ever-growing international scientific cooperation between nations worldwide promoted the formation of the Undergraduate Translation Program at UFRGS in 1973. The program aims at training translators with a solid bilingual foundation: Portuguese – English / English – Portuguese Portuguese – French / French – Portuguese Portuguese – German / German – Portuguese Portuguese – Italian / Italian – Portuguese Portuguese – Japanese / Japanese – Portuguese Portuguese – Spanish / Spanish – Portuguese

The students are granted a Bachelor of Arts degree in Translation for his/her fulfillment. In an area of 1.050 m², the Library of the Institute of Languages and Literature – called Biblioteca Setorial de Ciências Sociais e Humanidades (BSCSH) – houses one of the biggest collections within the library system at UFRGS, and is considered one of the best collections in Human and Social Sciences of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, with works on Anthropology, Archeology, Political Science, Social Science, Culture, Philology, Philosophy, History, Reading, Language Studies, Languages, Linguistics, Literature, Religion, Sociology, Rural Sociology and Syndicalism. Amongst its collections, the Rio Grande do Sul Collection can be highlighted as one composed of rare reference books.

The Institute of Languages and Literature is currently formed by three departments, which are divided into more specific study areas.

2) Department of Modern Languages – LET 2

and Russian.

3) Department of Linguistics and Philology – LET 3
