History

The Library of the Instituto de Pesquisas Hidráulicas (Hydraulic Research Institute) from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS) — acronym BIBIPH — was established after the construction of the Central Pavilion of the Institute, and the first items in the collection were recorded on May 20, 1958.

In 1978, the sector was relocated to the Prédio de Pesquisa e Extensão (Research and Extension building) due to the growth of the collection.

In 1998, the library was once again restructured to create new study spaces and further expand the collection area. Photo of the library in the Administrative Building space Library in its former space, in the Administrative Building of IPH

On August 7, 2003, as part of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Hydraulic Research Institute (IPH), the library was named Biblioteca José Leite de Souza, in honor of the former director who managed IPH from 1960 to 1976.

BIBIPH is responsible for providing information necessary for the development of teaching, research, and extension programs, establishing itself as a reference library in the field of water resources, at the state and national levels.
