A terrorist attack on the Al-Rawda mosque in the Sinai peninsula in Egypt killed at least 305 people. The region is constantly attacked by the Islamic State (EI), but, so far, no group has claimed action. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi promised a “brutal response” to the attackers on a TV address.
Emerson Mnangagwa has been sworn in as Zimbabwe President in a ceremony at a packed stadium in the capital, Harare. In his speech, Mnangagwa paid tribute to former President Robert Mugabe, whom he called the “father of the nation”, and vowed to fight poverty and corruption. He also said that elections will be held next year. Several heads of state from countries in the region, such as Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia, attended the ceremony. The main absence is that of Jacob Zuma, president of South Africa. Emmerson Mnangagwa takes over the presidency of the country after the political crisis that led to the resignation of President Robert Mugabe.
Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has submitted his resignation after nearly four decades as the country’s leader. Mugabe defied demands to step down for almost a week after a military takeover and expulsion from his own ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party but stepped down on Tuesday, hours after parliament started an impeachment process.
