Togo President Faure Gnassingbe wins fourth term

Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe has been re-elected for a fourth term, the national electoral commission has declared, extending his 15-year rule and a family dynasty that began when his father took power in a 1967 coup. The incumbent leader took 72 percent of the vote share in the first round of the presidential election, according to preliminary results from the commission on Monday, ahead of his closest rival and former prime minister Agbeyome Kodjo with 18 percent.

Malawi ruling party forms coalition ahead of May presidential poll re-run

Malawian president Peter Mutharika’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Tuesday entered into an alliance with United Democratic Front (UDF). The UDF governed Malawi between 1994 and 2004, and has 10 parliamentary seats. The DPP has 61 while the main opposition Malawi Congress Party has 55. This coalition comes a day after Malawi’s parliament set May 19 as the date for a fresh presidential election after a court overturned last year’s vote, citing widespread irregularities.

Protests in Guinea on President Alpha Conde’s bid to extend term

Hundreds of thousands of protesters in Guinea are expected to take to the streets again over President Alpha Conde’s proposal to hold a referendum to change the constitution. They are angry because Conde wants to change the constitution to allow him to govern beyond his final, second term. Opposition parties have threatened to boycott the vote. More than 30 people have died since demonstrations began in October.
