DR Congo forces kill leader of splinter Hutu armed group

Congolese forces have killed a rebel leader and four of his bodyguards in a security operation in the restive east of the country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) army said. Troops killed Hutu rebel leader “Musabimana Juvenal, alias general Jean-Michel Africa, following an intense clash” on Saturday at Rutshuru in North Kivu province, a statement from the army seen by AFP news agency said. Juvenal was a leader with the ethnic Hutu Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) formed in the DRC in the aftermath of the 1994 Tutsi genocide in neighbouring Rwanda.

Uganda accuses Rwandan military of “violation of territory”

Uganda has protested against an incursion by Rwandan soldiers on its territory that it said resulted in two deaths, a development that could inflame already tense relations between the neighbours.Two Rwandan soldiers entered Ugandan territory in the southwestern district of Rukiga on Friday in pursuit of a suspected smuggler, the Ugandan Foreign Affairs Ministry said on Saturday.

Rwandan lower house ratifies treaty establishing African Continental Free Trade Area

Rwanda’s lower house, Chamber of Deputies, on Tuesday unanimously passed a bill approving ratification of the treaty establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The bill also approved ratification of protocol on trade in goods, protocol on trade in services, and protocol on rules and procedures for settlement of disputes which were signed in Kigali, Rwanda, in March 2018. All the 60 lawmakers approved the bill, which will also go to Senate for approval. The treaty will come into effect after it is ratified by 22 countries.
